Keeping Your Furry Friends Safe this Halloween

Writer's picture: Teresa KhoTeresa Kho

Halloween is a fun and exciting time of year, but for our pets, it can be filled with hidden dangers.

At Aloha Veterinary Acupuncture, we understand the importance of keeping your furry family members safe during the holiday.

Here are some essential tips to ensure your pets stay happy and healthy this Halloween.

Keep Candy and Treats Out of Reach

Halloween is synonymous with candy, but most treats, especially chocolate and those containing xylitol are toxic to dogs and cats.

Even small amounts of these substances can lead to serious health issues, including vomiting, seizures, and in extreme cases, death.

Ensure all candy bowls and treat bags are kept well out of your pet’s reach.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has ingested something toxic.

Decorate with Care

Festive decorations add a spooky charm to your home, but they can pose hazards to curious pets.

Candles inside jack-o’-lanterns can be knocked over, causing burns or even fires. Small decorations or fake cobwebs can become choking hazards.

Instead, opt for safer alternatives like LED candles and keep all decorations out of your pet’s reach to prevent accidents.

Create a Safe Space for Your Pet

The constant ringing of the doorbell and the parade of trick-or-treaters in costumes can overwhelm even the calmest pets.

To reduce anxiety and prevent your pet from darting out the door, set up a quiet, comfortable space where they can relax during the festivities.

Consider using calming products like herbal sprays or consulting with your veterinarian about acupuncture treatments for pets with anxiety.

Choose Pet-Friendly Costumes

If you’re planning to dress up your pet, make sure the costume is safe, comfortable, and allows for easy movement.

Avoid costumes with small parts that could be chewed off and swallowed, and never leave your pet unattended while they’re dressed up.

Some pets may not enjoy wearing costumes, so if they seem uncomfortable, it’s best to skip it.

Acupuncture for Stress Relief

Halloween can be a stressful time for pets due to the increased noise, visitors, and disruptions to their routine. If your pet is prone to anxiety, consider acupuncture as a natural way to manage their stress.

At Aloha Veterinary Acupuncture, we offer acupuncture services that can help calm anxious pets, providing them with relief during high-stress periods like Halloween.

A Safe and Spooky Halloween for All

By following these tips, you can ensure your pet has a safe and stress-free Halloween.
